The KTM 390 Adventure R has officially launched in India with a price at ₹3.78 lakh (ex-showroom). It is a fundamental shift in hardware designed for the rider who looks at a “No Road” sign and sees an invitation. Curiously, it is priced lower than standard 390 Adventure by nearly ₹19,000, It’s actually more—specifically, more suspension, more ground clearance, and a lot more dirt-focused aggression.
KTM 390 Adventure R
The KTM 390 Adventure R flips the script. It is built on the same 399cc LC4c engine platform as the latest 390 Duke, but the similarities mostly end at the crankcase.

The Engine
Powering this orange beast is the same 398.7cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled DOHC engine that we’ve come to love (and slightly fear). It produces a healthy 46 PS of power and 39 Nm of torque.
KTM hasn’t messed with the power figures because, frankly, 46 horses in a 176 kg package is plenty to get you into—and out of—trouble. The power delivery is managed by a 6-speed gearbox equipped with a bi-directional quickshifter as standard. Whether you are clicking up through gears on a highway or downshifting aggressively into a sandy corner, the transmission remains clinical.
Suspension
If you want to know where your money went, look at the gold-anodized forks. The KTM 390 Adventure R ditches the standard suspension for WP Apex long-travel units.
-
Travel: 230mm at both the front and the rear.
-
Comparison: That is 30mm more than the standard model.
-
Capability: This extra travel allows the bike to soak up larger jumps and rutted trails without bottoming out.
Design and Ergonomics
Visually, the KTM 390 Adventure R looks like it just finished a stage of the Dakar Rally. The bodywork is slimmed down, featuring a “Rally Tower” inspired front end that places the 5-inch TFT display higher up for better visibility while standing on the pegs.

Ground Clearance and Seat Height
Because of the beefier suspension, the bike now boasts a massive 272mm of ground clearance. For context, that is more than most of its rivals, including the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450.
However, gravity has a price. The seat height now sits at a lofty 830mm. If you are under 5’8″, you might find yourself doing a bit of a “ballerina dance” at traffic lights. But for the off-road purist, this height is a badge of honor—it means the bike can clear boulders that would high-center a standard tourer.
“Why is the more capable bike ₹19,000 cheaper?” It comes down to the wheels.
-
Tube-Type Spoke Wheels: The KTM 390 Adventure R uses a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoke wheel setup.
-
The “Tube” Factor: Unlike the standard model’s expensive patented tubeless spoke wheels, the R variant uses traditional tube-type rims..
